In Hotel Rwanda and Night, two stages of genocide were quite evident. Although there were many stages shown throughout the display of events, dehumanization and classification seemed to shine upon both situations the most.
· In Night, the Jews were quickly separated from the rest of the world, due to Hitler’s beliefs, and they were soon treated as if they were not humans; being given numbers to now label them as property and tools, in a large unit of slavery. Being called different “numeric imprints” and “rats”, they were now classified as something other than the human race. (Wiesel 20)
· In Hotel Rwanda, Two different minorities had quickly separated themselves as a reaction to conflict between local citizens. An East African state, once under the rule of the same government, was now split and at the brink of war. The Tutsis, upset with how their land was being run, took action and planned attacks for many long months against their newly formed enemy, the Hutu, also known ( thanks to the dehumanization of the Tutsi) as cockroaches. (“The Genocide”)
Compare and Contrast: Darfur Genocide/Hotel Rwanda/Night
· The Rwandan Genocide was, in many ways, similar to the Darfur Genocide. When looking at the main idea of both conflicts, it is understood that both involve a “civil war” like situation, due to personal conflict/issues between Darfur Citizens. After land and cattle dispute, the SLM/A and the JEM rebelled against the Sudanese Military Police and the Janjaweed due to their support of the “military control”. On another note, the death rate behind the Darfur Genocide was quite similar to Holocaust in both numbers and actions. Regardless of what you had done right or wrong, you could have been killed instantly, with no reasoning behind your execution.
